One of the things that I have missed most about the last 2 years is not having fresh produce from our garden. I planted a garden at the Haines house and we sold it in August so we never got to enjoy any veggies from it. In the rental on Strawberry, we didn’t have a garden either. So…..yes…..I was all “hot and bothered” to get the garden in, gets things planted, and enjoy the fruits of my labor!

I’ve been watching the back yard since we moved in to see where the sun hits and how long it stays throughout the day. The North side of the back yard was perfect because it gets the sun as it moves from East to West with afternoon shade to protect any sensitive veggies that I plant. So after the ground was cleared and pretty level. Craig built a frame for me. I wanted to be able to stand on the frame to lean into the garden so we used 4x6 on end as the first level then built a second level on top of a 4x4. The garden is 24’ feet long x 4’ feet wide x 10” inches deep.

Garden frame is done and the plants are planted! There is still a chance of a light frost, but I’m checking the weather each day. We did not get frost and I never had to cover the garden. What is planted is: cucumbers, romaine lettuce (first time I’ve tried it), jalapeño pepper, green pepper, red pepper, Cherry 100 tomato, Early Girl tomato, Roma tomato, and snap peas (first time I’ve tried them). I separated each section with marigolds and as you can see from the June 15 pictures, I put grass clippings around the plants to help protect from heat, retain water, and keep the weeds down.
